My enthusiasm for the art of drawing was awakened at an early age: I lived in the house of my grandfather Werner Ruhner, a busy book illustrator in the GDR. He often illustrated science fiction novels and I was particularly impressed by these illustrations. I loved to look over his shoulder as quiet as a mouse while he was working. For me he was a kind of magician and his Atelier with the many colorful drawing utensils was his magical place of work. It was only much later that I was able to read the books he illustrated myself.
Despite all the inspiration, I saw in him an unattainable ideal and for a few years I was hardly able to finish drawing anything myself.
But over time I found my niche in abstract art. One could say I was tricking myself not to emulate him by avoiding drawing scenes and figures. Instead I enjoyed playing with patterns, shapes and colores. For my own surprise and delightment I was able to create something I consider beautiful.
So I gained esteem in what I am doing by the time and I am curious myself where my journey will lead me…
Currently I made a big change in my life: I left my longtime hometown for good, switched to mobile working, cut my working time and started to realize my long time dream to discover the world first hand. Now I finally have that amount of time to draw as I always wished to have. :)
Such a gift from heaven to have a grandfather like that!
